Choosing a budget telephoto canon DSLR lens

Hi,

I am buying a used canon EF/EF-South lens to go with my Catechism EOS 1200d.

Should I become the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 II (perchance USM), or the Canon EF-Southward 55-250mm f/four-5.6 IS.

Or a similarly priced third-party lens.

I like the idea of IS simply am a very tight budget and need all the reach I can become.

Cheers.

You may accept a typo.  There are many xx-300mm Canon zooms.  The very good lxx-300 IS Ii USM is not in your budget.  The much poorer 70-300 IS USM is in your budget.  The EF-S 55-250 is just as poor.

Avert all of the Catechism EF 75-300mm lenses...all poor.

Your best cheap lens is the very onetime, but better, Catechism EF 100-300mm f4.five-5.six USM.  Information technology does non accept IS.  If you lot shoot a lot of still subjects in extremely depression low-cal situations without flash then IS is useful.  For typical outdoor photography IS is unnecessary.

If IS is a must wait until you tin can get the Canon EF 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 IS Ii USM.

We accept insufficient information.

Do yous accept a "normal" lens 35mm, 50mm, 24-70,... to go with the 70-300 or 55-250 ?

Rational: I have a 70-200 F/4 L, and I find that my 24-70 spends well-nigh all the time on my camera. When I demand reach, I tin can popular it out, only mainly it sits in the bag.

Or a similarly priced third-party lens.

Get a normal lens kickoff:: 15-85, 24-70, 35mm, 50mm, starting time. Something that volition sit down on your camera until it is time to shoot at things far away.

Correct

The seventy-300mm USM is a much ameliorate lens.

I don't know how the afterwards 75-300 USM non-L versions are, but I had the "mark one" from about 17 or 18 years ago, and it had a lot of global flare (mediocre dissimilarity, IOW), and was not especially sharp wide open, even noticeable on the 6MP EOS 10D.

The OP's goals on the OP's budget are tough, if i is seeking sharpness wide open on the long cease, good contrast, modern IS, and fast AF.

Canon lenses may be safer, since the OP has a Insubordinate, which, I believe, has no micro-focus adjustment.  Some 3rd-party lenses can exist tuned for AF with a USB dock, but that can be a little ho-hum, making adjustments blind and and so having to re-assemble the lens and camera to examination the settings.

Yep forget MPB, Wex are better and cheaper for 2nd hand lens, plus you get a full 1 year warranty, MPB simply offers a 6 month and their mint are a college price to equivalent the aforementioned to WEX.

Almost, information technology covers the "normal" range 50mm or on a cropped camera 35mm.

Me, I employ a 24-seventy F/2.viii as a normal lens, and my wife uses a 15-85 every bit hither normal lens.

Yes, information technology's a typo. I meant the 75-300mm. What a wally I am!

The very good seventy-300 IS Ii USM is not in your upkeep. The much poorer 70-300 IS USM is in your upkeep. The EF-S 55-250 is but equally poor.

Avoid all of the Canon EF 75-300mm lenses...all poor.

Your best inexpensive lens is the very old, but meliorate, Canon EF 100-300mm f4.5-5.vi USM. It does not have IS. If you shoot a lot of still subjects in extremely low light situations without flash then IS is useful. For typical outdoor photography IS is unnecessary.

Are you sure? Ameliorate than 75-300mm III USM? The reviews i have read about it are good (https://world wide web.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/100-300mm.htm, likewise the ones on google), But the identify I am thinking of buying the lens from (Cex, https://united kingdom.webuy.com/product-detail?id=scmacanef100300m01&categoryName=camera-lenses&superCatName=electronics&championship=catechism-ef-100-300mm-f-four.5-5.6-usm-black-lens&referredFrom=search ) sells it for only £85, while the ef 75-300mm III USM is £130.

What does every-one else recall almost the 100-300mm vs 75-300mm?

Also, to dgumshu and Krusty79 The 600mm would be astonishing, but there is no way I could salve upward the money. As well, it would be a bit OTT to have a £700 (MPB) lens on a £200 camera.
